SHOES FOR AUSTIN
Thousands of children in Central Texas have never known the joy of a brand new pair of shoes.
Together we are changing that, one child and one pair of shoes at a time.

Every summer, Shoes for Austin partners with 107.1 KGSR to host a Back to School Donations Drive to raise funds to purchase shoes to distribute to kids throughout the school year. The beginning of the school year creates an extra burden on low-income families because children need new clothes and school supplies. Our goal is to make sure kids get off on the right foot and feel good about themselves this school year.

On Saturday, May 5th, 2007 Shoes for Austin hosted the 7th Annual Shoes for Austin 5K Run/Walk and Kid’s 1K at the Park at La Frontera in Round Rock, Texas. The USA Track and Field certified 5K course wound around La Frontera neighborhood and business center and the Kid’s 1K course followed one block around the park. Following the Kid’s 1K, New Balance sport bags were presented to the overall male and female finishers and the first three male and female finishers in ten age groups. All the Kid’s 1K participants were winners and received a medal after crossing the finish line.

Students from Bluebonnet Elementary sang the National Anthem and Round Rock Councilmember Rhode started the event with a pre-race pep talk and a blow of the horn. We had many special guests on race day including 24 Hour Fitness, First State Bank, New Balance and Run Tex staff conducting personalized foot assessments. Participants stayed for the after party and enjoyed refreshments from Jason’s Deli, Sweet Leaf Tea, and Maggie Moo’s Ice Cream. Kids kept busy playing in the bouncy house, running two Youth Interactive obstacle courses, and visiting with the Round Rock Fire Department.

All proceeds generated from the event will help Shoes for Austin fulfill our shoe grants for 2007. Hope to see you all at next year’s event.
